In an age of commercial tourism Luosto survives, deep in the pine forests, as a truly natural resort. Although lying just above the Arctic Circle, Luosto and Lapland enjoy a superb summer climate, as well as unsurpassed peace and tranquility. It is easy to feel the pull of nature and to understand the hardships of those early pioneers exploring those last few wild frontiers.
Here the reindeer outnumber the human population, and where you will find they still wander into and around the resort at their leisure. For car drivers the reindeer is a common site as they meander across the roads ignoring all signs of human activity.
Luosto is an idyllic unspoiled village resort nestling at the foot of one of the remaining mountains created during the ice age, in ancient untouched forest, where the true-to-nature traditions of buildings have been upheld, with cabins still being built from pine snag - originally the logs discarded by the Log Floating Association, and which is still the main building material in the village today.
Walking through the colourful forests it is easy to imagine (if it is not the case in reality) that you are the first person to tread that path. There is almost no traffic, yet there are pedestrian and cycle paths all around the village.
You will find every modern convenience. The cabins are half-hidden amidst the pine trees, yet each hotel room and every cabin offered by us has private facilities and colour TV. Cabins have their own private saunas (as much a summer as a winter tradition), as well as log fires and central heating (for the early and later parts of the summer). There is even a health spa.
The cuisine will tempt the taste buds and, in accordance with the principles of Luosto, uses as much local natural produce as possible - berries, mushrooms, fish, game and finnish cheeses. Nevertheless, like all quality resorts, you will also find a range of international cuisine.
Close to edge of the forest is Luoston Hovi, a large log cabin with friendly bar and bistro, and which makes a convenient meeting place for most of the activities and tours and for that much deserved cold beer or gin and tonic after a day of activity. There are also regular "event" evenings such as BBQ's and Lappish nights. |
